— About the instructor:
Lebene Mawutor is a dancer, choreographer and creative director of Ghanaian and Togolese decent. At the age of 5 she was inspired by Missy Elliot’s prominent and unique style, which led her to have an interest in dance. During high school she joined traditional west african dance and drum group Sangea. With this group she danced and performed at many festivals in Edmonton and also outside of the city. While developing skills in hip-hop, dancehall and contemporary classes, Lebene developed her own fusion of all these styles while still keeping a strong core foundation in traditional West African Movement. She developed a love for creating choreography through her eccentric style of movement which granted her the opportunity to dance for popular Afrobeats Artists such as Iyanya and BM. Lebene believes that through art she change the narrative that people have of Africa, while sharing the beauty and the multiple cultures of this great continent.
