The Needle and Edmonton's NextGen proudly present…
NextGen City Jam, a packed night of live music that encourages Edmontonians to volunteer in YEG with headliner A Tribe Called Red! The concept is simple: volunteer a minimum of 10 hours and snag a ticket to a fantastic event! Whether you're volunteering for the first time, or you're a long-time volunteer, City Jam is our way to say thanks for all that you're doing to shape Edmonton.
Edmonton’s NextGen, an initiative of the City of Edmonton, is pleased to host A Tribe Called Red who will headline the second NextGen City Jam, thanks in part to the generous support of presenting sponsor Canadian Western Bank.
Mixing traditional pow wow vocals and drumming with cutting edge electronic music, A Tribe Called Red celebrate their aboriginal culture, alongside an open, wild party.
Bursting forth from Ottawa, native Producer and DJ crew A Tribe Called Red are making an impact on the global electronic scene with a truly unique sound. A Tribe Called Red is Bear Witness, 2oolman, and Dee Jay NDN.
ATCR straddles a broad range of musical influences based in modern hip-hop, traditional pow wow drums and vocals, blended with edgy electronic music production styles. The crew has performed high profile festival dates at Coachella, Bonnaroo, AfroPunk, Osheaga, and New Orleans Jazz Fest to list a few. In 2014, they garnered mainstream recognition when the band became the first Indigenous group to win the Breakthrough Group of the Year award at the Juno Awards. ATCR was also long-listed for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize in 2012 and 2013 and its debut album was included in the Washington Post’s top 10 albums of that same year. More recently the crew tied for most nominations for the 2017 iHeartRadio Canada MuchMusic Video Awards, ultimately winning two awards including Video of the Year.
A Tribe Called Red promotes inclusivity, empathy and acceptance amongst all races and genders in the name of social justice. They believe that indigenous people need to define their identity on their own terms. If you share this vision, then you are already part of the Halluci Nation.
Like ATRC, Edmonton’s NextGen motivates young people to define their own future. With City Jam, NextGen and Canadian Western Bank are encouraging young Edmontonians to shape the city we live in through volunteering. Following a successful City Jam in 2016, which raised more than 6500 hours for local volunteer programs, NextGen is excited to bring CItyJam to The Needle Vinyl Tavern. Additional musical guests to be announced.
